CLASS function in PROC GENMOD

Hi,

Can anyone explain to me what I need to write in the CLASS statement when using PROC GENMOD? I was under the impression that I need to include all categorical (independent) variables that I use in my model. However having looked at multiple examples this doesn't seem to be the case. Any advice?
